Enjoy swimming or just being by our peaceful Lake? Noticed the increasing mass of Water Hyacinth weed floating around this year? Feel like lending a hand and don’t mind getting a little messy? This could be a morning for you.
Water hyacinth is a beautiful but ferocious aquatic weed, which floats on water bodies and in growing seasons can double its mass every 5 days. In other areas it’s smothered entire water bodies.
It first appeared in Lake Ainsworth in 2015, and Lennox Head Landcare volunteers have paddled through the summer months since then to keep the hyacinth in check. But this year has been a bumper growth season and it’s taken way more effort than usual to get it under control.
It’s been humbling to see so many folks helping with the hyacinth removal this year; including friends of Landcarers, Dragon Boaters, Duke of Edinburgh students, staff from sport and rec, a local kayak crew and even holiday makers.
On Saturday 19th October we’ll be continuing our efforts to remove the hyacinth, and plan to focus on the Lakes western edges on foot - so no paddle boards or kayaks needed for this session.

- We’ll working from 8:30am till 10am.
- Please meet and register with us in the Lake's south west corner picnic area, look out for Kelly with a clipboard.
- We recommend wearing a long sleeve shirt or rashie in case there’s crawly things. You may also like to wear some shoes that you're happy to get wet as we'll be walking in and out of the water - sometimes there's sharp bits underfoot among the reeds .
